Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission
The Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission serves the community with a wide range of assistance that includes: Weatherization of homes for the elderly and low-income families; crisis intervention to provide assistance with food, clothing, and fuel bills for low-income families; and assistance with management of funds and budgeting for low-income families.BROC's Alleghany Planning Committee assists low-income families with garden seed vouchers and camp scholarships. A new project of the Committee will be to provide college scholarships for low-income families. BROC also operates Sparta's Head Start program, a preschool for 3- and 4-year-old children. The BROC office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
