Some 18 local governmental offices are directly administered by Alleghany County government. They have there own website -- alleghanycounty-nc.gov -- however, they are directly accessible from this site. Other governmental offices function under a combination of local, regional, state and federal mandates. Chief among the regional authorities: The local Health Department is part of the three county Appalachian District Health Department. New River Behavioral Healthcare is part of the five county New River Area Program. The Alleghany Public Library is part of the 10 county Northwestern Regional Libarary. The community college campus is part of the three county Wilkes Community College.

The county is also one of the seven counties of the Region D Council of Governments and one of the 23 counties in the Advantage West Regional Economic Development Commission.

All government offices derive their authority from elected officials. The information below is a brief summary of the elected officials serving the county.

Centrally located in Alleghany County is Sparta, the county seat and the only incorporated town in the county. It serves as the financial, trade, and governmental hub. Sparta's 2,000 residents operate under the council/manager form of government. Elected council members are responsible for policy. They hire a town manager to manage daily administration responsibilities. The 10,000 county residents have a five-member board of elected commissioners and a county manager, hired by the board, to handle day-to-day administration.

Responsibility for the county's three elementary schools and one high school rests with five elected school board members and a superintendent, hired for day-to-day administration.
