Council on Aging

85 E Whitehead St., Sparta NC acoa7986@skybest.com 336-372-4640

The Alleghany County Council on Aging provides a number of services to older Americans to promote their health and wellness and is a center for seniors in Alleghany County to gather and socialize. These services include home-delivered meals and congregate meals to residents 60 years of age and older. They are provided Monday through Friday (except holidays and when the schools are closed for inclement weather).

Congregate meals are served at 11:30 a.m. in the gray rock Community Center building at 85 East Whitehead Street in Sparta.

Participants are encouraged to come to the Center in the morning before the meals to visit and socialize. On Tuesdays, participants can play Bingo. On Fridays, there is Gospel singing. Speakers are sometimes available on other mornings to provide information on topics of interest to older Americans.

A Social Security representative is available at the Community Center building from 1 to 4 p.m. the second Thursday of each month to answer questions from residents.

The Council on Aging can provide basic housecleaning services for seniors whose inability to complete such tasks might require them to seek a rest home or nursing home placement. These are limited to daily tasks that contribute to managing in the home.

There is a fitness room at the Community Center with exercise equipment that is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Seniors are encourage to stop by the Community Center and become acquainted with the services and other special programs. If you have time to give, volunteers are always needed to deliver meals to the home.

The hours of the Council on Aging at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
