Crouse Park: Recreation for all ages

Located a block north of the center of town at the corner of Grayson and Cherry streets, Crouse Park is one of the most complete public parks for such a small community. The property was the home of R. Floyd and Crystal Crouse and left to the town in honor of Mr. Crouse's parents, Floyd and Ellen Gambill Crouse.

R. Floyd Crouse (1892-1969) was Sparta's first mayor following incorporation in 1925. A graduate of the University of North Carolina and the Harvard Law School, he was one of the community's most prominent lawyers during the middle of the 20th century and a champion of conservation causes.

The home of Mr. Crouse is located in the park as is available for community use. Except for the Crouse House, the park never closes. The numerous large trees are a popular retreat from the summer sun.

The park features a basketball, volleyball and shuffleboard court, and a horseshoe pit. However, no equipment is provided. If you want to play, bring your own ball or equipment. Shuffleboard and basketball are located on the same court. Use is on a first-come basis.

An extensive playground has equipment for children toddler aged and older. There is area with outdoor physical fitness equipment for adults and a quarter-mile paved walking track that encircles the park. Two covered picnic pavilions with barbecue pits round out the park's amenities. Public rest rooms are also available.

The downstairs portion of the Crouse House is available for use by reservation. It features a large living room, large kitchen, rest room and two other rooms.

The picnic pavilions and Crouse House are available for public use and are popular for family reunions and other gatherings. There is no charge for use of the pavilions and they can be reserved by calling the town office at 336-372-4257.

The home is available for a $25 fee. Reservations and information about the home are available by calling the town office at 336-372-4257.
