Town of Sparta
Administration and Services

304 S. Main St., Sparta NC sprt@skybest.com 336-372-4257

Welcome to the Town of Sparta website. The Town of Sparta is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the New River, a vacationer's paradise. The Town serves a population of just under 2,000 with police protection, water and sewer utilities and garbage service. Located in the middle of town is the Crouse Park with picnic shelters, playground and walking path.

Sparta is governed by a Town Council-Town Manager administration, whose goal is to provide maximum services with minimum taxes. The Town Council meets on the first Tuesday each month at the Sparta Town Hall at 7 p.m. The Council also meets in joint session with the Alleghany Board of County Commissioners at 7 p.m. on the firth Monday of the month. Meetings alternate between Sparta Town Hall and the Conference Room of the County Office Building. Typically, no meeting is held when the fifth Monday falls in December or January. Please call the Town Office for more information on the schedule and location of joint meetings.

The five Council members and Mayor are elected town-wide on a non-partisan basis for four-year staggered terms. Those elected officials are Mayor John Miller and Council Members Robert E. Andrews, John Brady, Agnes Joines, Mike Parlier and Lois Sheets.

The Town appoints the zoning enforcement officer, Planning Board members, Board of Adjustment members and ABC (Alcohol Board of Control) Board members. The Town is affiliated with Region D Council of Government, Institute of Government, and the North Carolina League of Municipalities. Sparta boasts of small-town charm but at the same time is committed to providing the best possible quality of life not excluding technology and products. Come visit with us, come stay with us!

The Town of Sparta office hours are 8:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday at 304 South Main Street. There is a drop-box located beside the door for utility payments. Yard sale permits, privilege licenses, zoning applications and feasibility permits may be obtained at this address. Trash is picked up at most residences on Tuesdays and needs to be at the curb before 7:00 a.m. Recycling is every other Thursday.
