We’re excited to announce the release of our newest book, Alleghany Historical-Genealogical Society Quarterly Newsletters, 2006-2017. Available now, the book features over a decade of the Society’s award-winning newsletter, edited by Jeff Halsey & Claire Halsey Brooks. For several years, the newsletter has received the Joe M. McLaurin Newsletter Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians.

Books are available in Sparta at the Alleghany Historical Museum (open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11-3), and online at both www.starroutebooks.com and www.ahgs.org.

From the book’s introduction by Jeff Halsey:
“AHGS, first founded in 1979, has taken on many worthwhile projects over the years– including the books, Alleghany County Heritage and Alleghany County Cemeteries Through 1986, the Alleghany Memories television series and the largest and most visible, the Alleghany Historical Museum.

“But one of our favorites has been the Alleghany Newsletter, now called, The Alleghany Chinquapin. We took over production of the newsletter from Pauline Meals in 2006 and have been working at it ever since. We plan to have another volume out by the end of this year, consisting of newsletters spanning 2018-2026.

“Stories in the newsletter are gathered from many sources– the books mentioned above are just a few. Those resources, and accessible archives like the Alleghany News, and (another endless list) of newspapers, DigitalNC, NCpedia, etc., we gratefully acknowledge, here. Without the support of folks like Coby LaRue, Bob Bamberg and Ron Brown of the Alleghany News and Milly Richardson of the Blue Ridge Sun, our newsletter wouldn’t be the same. (And I would have to work so much harder.)”

The softcover, 8.5” x 11” book is 324 pages, with a full color interior on premium paper, and includes a name index. A portion of the sales of this edition will help maintain the Alleghany Historical Museum, a project of the Alleghany Historical-Genealogical Society, Inc. located at 45 N. Main Street in Sparta, NC.
